Cars with combustion engines already have an expiration date in Europe

Carros_Europa

International. In the year 2035, cars that emit CO2 will be banned in European territory. This was decided by the 27 member countries of the European Union, represented by their Environment Ministers, after approving the project proposed by the European Commission in July 2021.

This seeks to have net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.

According to the Commission's accounts, vehicles have a useful life of between ten and 15 years. Hence, the last ones that are sold in 2035 would fulfill their life cycle by that date. Currently, the automotive sector accounts for 12% of the total gases emitted in Europe.

However, some countries such as Germany (the largest car manufacturer in the European Union) and Italy urged to contemplate the possibility of registering even in 2035 those vehicles that use synthetic fuels or rechargeable hybrid engines that completely eliminate greenhouse gas emissions.

On the other hand, emission exemptions granted to niche builders or those who produce less than 10,000 cars per year were also extended until the end of 2035. It is considered that this clause, known as the "Ferrari amendment", will be of special benefit to luxury brands.
