Electric vehicle refinishing: new challenges for workshops and paint manufacturers

Colombia. As electric vehicles (EVs) become more common in repair shops, the refinish process presents new technical and safety considerations.

Although paint application remains similar to that of combustion vehicles, battery systems and integrated technology require changes in procedures.

The increase in electric vehicles on the road has led collision shops to adapt their repainting processes. Although the structure and materials of the body have not changed significantly, the heat management and safety of high-voltage systems place new demands.

One of the main concerns is the curing process. The temperatures traditionally used to speed up paint drying can damage battery systems if the specific parameters of the vehicle manufacturer are not followed. Each brand sets different temperature and exposure time limits depending on the design and location of the batteries.

To meet this challenge, paint manufacturers have developed low-temperature curing technologies, as well as air, ultraviolet (UV) or infrared drying options. These alternatives allow the quality of the refinish to be maintained while reducing the risk of damage to the electrical components.

In addition to curing, repainting EVs involves taking into account advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), which may require subsequent recalibrations. The growing variety of complex colors in EVs must also be considered, which demands high-precision painting systems and digital color matching tools.

In this context of technical transformation, events such as Repintado Days become key spaces for updating the sector. This technical and commercial conference will be held on June 19 in Medellín, at the Comfama Ciudad del Río center. With free and open admission to technicians, workshops, distributors, dealers and specialized brands, the event seeks to connect the supply and demand of the automotive refinishing sector in Latin America.

During the event, attendees will be able to participate in 45-minute technical talks, focused on repainting procedures, emerging technologies and good practices of the trade. In addition, there will be a commercial exhibition with innovative products and negotiation tables organized by leading brands in the sector.

Repainting Days responds to an expanding market: automotive refinishing has grown in the region driven by the aging of the vehicle fleet, the high demand for aesthetic repair services and the technological evolution towards more sustainable and efficient products.

The incorporation of technologies with low energy consumption and lower environmental impact requires constant updating by professionals in the sector. For this reason, the event not only offers commercial spaces, but also certificates of participation and technical reports for registered attendees, strengthening its educational proposal.

This event is organized by Aftermarket International and Zona de Pinturas. He is part of AutoAméricas Show.
