Around 600 companies boost the auto parts sector in Colombia

Autopartes

Latin America. Between January and April 2022, 204 national companies exported 136 million dollars to 55 destinations, which represented an increase of 16.5% compared to the same period in 2021, mainly due to greater purchases from the United States, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru.

According to Procolombia, the entity in charge of promoting tourism and foreign investment in Colombia, the country is consolidating itself as a supplier of auto parts for the Americas.

For this, it alludes to data from the consulting firm Statista. According to the latter, the country produced 40,764 private vehicles last year, compared to 434,753 units in Argentina, 2,248,253 in Brazil and 3,145,653 units in Mexico that produce private and cargo vehicles.

Between 2016 and 2020, Colombia manufactured more than 22 million units of auto parts. According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), shock absorbers, pads with plate for disc brakes and wheels are the most manufactured.

Procolombia highlights that auto parts exports in 2019 were US$328 million, before the pandemic, while in 2021 they reached US$356.8 million.

Indirect beneficiary

Procolombia recalls, based on figures from TradeMap, that world imports of auto parts in 2021 reached US$828,510 million, growing 18% compared to 2020 and recovering the growing trend after two years (2019 and 2020) of fall.

The main importing countries in 2021 were the United States (US$150,556 million), Germany (US$78,935 million), Mexico (US$48,584 million), China (US$42,177 million) and France (US$31,863 million).

The production of new cars lost a lot of pace in the pandemic and the used ones were valued. This, according to Procolombia, benefited Colombia as a supplier by being a specialist in auto parts replacement.

The president of Procolombia, Flavia Santoro, said that the country has taken advantage of its strengths. Among them are "the qualified and specialized workforce in industrial processes, an offer with socially responsible and environmentally friendly products, and adequate delivery times to supply international demand", which in his opinion "make the country an ideal commercial partner".

According to Procolombia, the country has an extensive network of companies related to the auto parts activity. "There are about 600 companies in the manufacturing activity of auto parts and accessories for vehicles; more than 4,800 companies in the activity of maintenance and repair of vehicles and motorcycles, and approximately 6,400 in the activity of trade of auto parts and accessories for vehicles. Likewise, companies comply with international standards such as ISO 9001 IATF 16994, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, AS 9100D, "says the entity.

In that sense, with the aim of promoting the positioning of Colombian auto parts, ProColombia accompanied a mission of eight national companies that participated in the Automotive Meetings fair from June 21 to 23 in Querétaro, Mexico.

This is a commercial showcase specialized in the automotive sector, with a matchmaking format focused on the supply chain. In the previous versions, the fair had the participation of leading manufacturers of heavy vehicles, buses, trucks, light vehicles, special vehicles, among others.

Among the national companies that participated in the fair were Fasecol de Risaralda, which develops electric harnesses; Met Group (Risaralda), which produces car seats and routers for transport systems; Transtec (Cundinamarca), which manufactures bus failures, outlets and fans; Mowin Techlologies (Risaralda), with electronic routers for the automotive industry.

Next to them were presented Riduco (Caldas), with plastic parts for the automotive industry (bumpers, front panel and handles); TNK (Cundinamarca), with terminals and axials for steering and suspension; Tractec (Boyacá), with suspensions for trailers and semi-trailers; and Multipartes (Valle del Cauca), with external and internal rearview mirrors, directional lights, among other auto parts.
