International. Mass adoption of electric vehicles is unlikely to happen by 2030, because electric vehicles with a real-world range of around 300 miles won't be available at the standard price by that date, according to a new report from GoCompare.
The report found that public charging infrastructure will need to be improved for drivers to make the switch. At present, the UK has a proportion of 205 electric vehicles per public fast charger. By 2030, the ration will be 197 per fast charger, which is only a slight improvement.
Scotland will become the best place to own an electric vehicle by 2030, as seven of the top 10 areas projected for public availability of fast chargers are located north of the border.
GoCompare automotive expert Ryan Fulthorpe commented: "It's great to see more people buying electric vehicles over the next ten years, but significant infrastructure improvements will be needed to support the increased uptake. Our research highlights that some areas may not have the number of chargers needed to support the number of electric vehicles there, which could be problematic for those looking to complete long-distance trips. Without further investment, the widespread adoption of electric vehicles will have significant challenges ahead."
GoCompare estimated that there will be 952,260 electric vehicles registered in the UK by the end of 2021, and it is expected to rise to 3.8 million by 2031.
