Continental integrates high-performance computer for electric vehicle

International. The BMW iX electric vehicle integrates Continental's high-performance cockpit computer. The company then seeks to manage the increasing complexity of the software as well as the rapidly growing functional scope in the cockpit. The computer also provides the computing power needed for functions on the supplier's head-up display and large-scale in-vehicle display landscape.

Together with the driver's camera integrated into the digital instrument cluster, Continental offers essential components for seamless interaction between driver and vehicle with a new type of user experience.

For ikolai Setzer, CEO of Continental "the user experience is becoming an increasingly important decision criterion for vehicle buyers. With our core components for intuitive, safe, but above all engaging interaction between driver and vehicle in the BMW iX, as well as our expertise in software development and system integration, we help promote sustainable mobility."

Integrated and decentralized architecture, the solution

The electronic architecture of the BMW iX bridges the gap between today's distributed architecture and the integrated, centralised architecture of the vehicle of the future. Instead of relying on multiple electronic control units, BMW's new electric vehicle concentrates the computing power of various functions into a few mainframe computers. Continental's cab domain controller is responsible for various software functions and manages all input and output devices inside the vehicle centrally, in a single electronic control unit.

The company said: "This also merges infotainment and instrumentation functions so that they can now be freely configured. This allows for maximum customization for drivers and passengers, as well as greater freedom in vehicle design. The high-performance mainframe also opens the door to third-party applications and cloud services and supports hardware-independent software integration. Combined with the solution for over-the-air software upgrades, this creates opportunity and expandability for the cabin."

In conclusion, this allows for maximum customization for drivers and passengers, as well as greater freedom in vehicle design. The high-performance mainframe also opens the door to third-party applications and cloud services and supports hardware-independent software integration.
